Do comparison pages help you get cited by AI tools?

They can, when the page reads like a fair comparison and admits where a competitor wins. Buyers lean on AI to compare vendors (82 percent of the buyers G2 surveyed in 2026 sourced software recommendations from an AI chatbot, and half of them said AI mattered most when narrowing and comparing options), yet in IT and solutions services brand-owned pages were only 2 percent of the top sources AI engines cited in a 107-million-answer analysis. We write comparison pages to hold up next to the review sites and forum threads they compete with, because a page that claims to win on everything gives a model little reason to quote it.

Key takeaways

  • G2 found 82 percent of surveyed software buyers took recommendations from an AI chatbot in the last 24 months.
  • In IT and solutions services, brand-owned pages were 2 percent of top AI citation sources in Trendos data.
  • A fair comparison page uses the buyer's criteria and says plainly where the competitor is the better pick.
  • Name the competitor on the page and say which buyers they suit better than you.

Why do buyers ask AI tools to compare vendors?

Because comparing is the slow part of buying, and an assistant lays several vendors side by side in one reply. Half of the buyers G2 surveyed who used an AI chatbot for recommendations said AI had its greatest impact when narrowing and comparing options.

The numbers come from G2's 2026 Buyer Behavior Report: The Evaluation Maze, announced July 22, 2026 and based on a survey of more than 1,000 B2B software buyers and decision-makers. The 82 percent covers the last 24 months.

One finding in the same report pulls the other way. Review sites, at 38 percent, became the top source shaping which vendors make a buyer's shortlist, passing AI chatbots at 37 percent for the first time. G2 is itself a review site, so we read that one with the publisher in mind.

How does your own comparison page compete with review sites and Reddit threads?

It starts at a disadvantage, going by the one industry breakdown we have. In IT and solutions services, Trendos found brand-owned sources were 2 percent of the top 10 sources AI engines cited.

Trendos analyzed 107 million AI answers across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews, and its COO and co-founder Gintare Rimolaityte published the breakdown in Search Engine Journal on August 27, 2026. The article is a sponsored post, paid for by Trendos.

In IT and solutions services, community and user generated content, the category forum threads fall into, took 51 percent. Independent editorial and reference sources took 47 percent, and the article says much of that is B2B review directories: Clutch, G2, GoodFirms, Gartner, SourceForge, and Slashdot. Brand-owned sources took 2 percent.

That is one industry. We do take a standard from it: your comparison will be read next to a directory listing and a forum thread about the same two vendors, and it has to be worth quoting in that company.

What makes a comparison page fair enough to cite?

It is fair enough when a buyer could use it to choose the competitor. That starts with criteria the buyer cares about, whether or not you win them.

MadX, an agency that sells SEO and AI search services, says it most directly. Its playbook, bylined Perry Steward and dated October 7, 2026, reads: "Honest, specific comparisons get cited. Pages that claim you win on everything get skipped." That is advice from a company that sells this work, as we do, and no measured study sits behind it.

We agree for a reason that has little to do with models. A page that wins every row reads as an ad, and buyers discount ads.

Should a comparison page name competitors directly?

Yes. The buyer types the competitor's name into the assistant, so a page that says "other tools" does not match the question being asked.

Put the competitor's name in the title and the table header, and describe their product the way their own site does.

Naming a competitor is different from attacking one. We do not write that a competitor is bad or overpriced, and we would not advise anyone else to.

None of this is quick. We take a baseline of how assistants answer the comparison question before we touch the page, and report answer share against it each month. Movement typically shows in one to three months, and nobody can promise that an assistant will cite the page.

The sentence we push hardest for is the one a company least wants to publish, the one that says who should pick the competitor instead of you. A buyer comparing the two of you is going to read that sentence somewhere, in a review or a forum thread. We would rather they read it on your page.

FAQs about Do comparison pages help you get cited by AI tools

1. What is the difference between a comparison page and an alternatives page?

A comparison page sets you against one named competitor, usually under an "X vs Y" title. An alternatives page answers "alternatives to X" and covers several vendors, with you as one of them.

2. Will ChatGPT cite my comparison page if I add a comparison table?

Nobody can promise that. MadX, an agency that sells SEO and AI search services, recommends clear criteria and tables, and its playbook is guidance with no measured study behind it.

3. How long does a comparison page take to show up in AI answers?

Movement typically shows in one to three months, which is slower than paid ads. We check it against a baseline of how assistants answered the comparison question before the page changed.
