Reviews on G2 and Capterra work as a credibility gate for AI recommendations rather than a ranking lever. Loudmink's study of 233 ChatGPT software recommendations found 99 to 100 percent of the named tools had profiles on both sites, while review volume tracked slightly negative against ranking and the review pages themselves took zero direct citations. Kalungi's August 2026 tracker puts review platforms under 2 percent of the visibility gap between competing vendors, behind YouTube, LinkedIn, and Reddit, so the job is a current profile rather than a review-count campaign.
Key takeaways
- In Loudmink's 233 ChatGPT recommendations, 100 percent of named tools had Capterra reviews and 99 percent had G2.
- Review volume tracked negative against ranking in that study, minus 0.21 on Capterra and minus 0.16 on G2.
- G2 bought Capterra, Software Advice and GetApp from Gartner in February 2026, near 6 million reviews in one company.
- G2's survey of 1,076 buyers found 51 percent now start software research in an AI chatbot instead of a search engine.
Do you need a G2 or Capterra profile to be named by ChatGPT?
Close to every tool ChatGPT named in Loudmink's study had both. Across 233 software recommendations, 100 percent of the named tools had reviews on Capterra and 99 percent had reviews on G2.
Presence and citation come apart here. Review aggregators accounted for 0.9 percent of all direct citations in that study, and the G2 and Capterra pages themselves received zero. Almost every recommendation had those profiles sitting behind it, and no answer linked to one.
The study also cannot tell you what happens without a profile. All 233 recommendations came from tools that already had one on both sites, so the 99 and 100 percent describe who gets recommended rather than what the listing did. That comparison does not exist in anything we read.
So we treat the profile as setup work. Claim it, keep the pricing and the product description current, then leave it alone. On a client it is a first-month job with nothing recurring behind it.
Does having more reviews improve your odds of being cited?
No, and the correlation runs the other way. In Loudmink's study, review volume tracked weakly negative against where a tool ranked in the recommendation, minus 0.21 on Capterra and minus 0.16 on G2.
Read that carefully, because it does not mean a thinner profile wins. A correlation that weak, running either way, is nothing to build a quarter around. What it rules out is the version where the review count goes up and the citations follow.
If you arrived here with a review drive already scoped and a target number in the deck, this is the paragraph you want to fight, so here is the limit of what we are standing on. Loudmink read 233 recommendations from one model, at one moment. That is enough to say the count is not the lever for AI, and nowhere near enough to say what your next fifty reviews do for a buyer reading the page with their own eyes.
Kalungi's quarterly tracker points the same way from a different angle. Its August 2026 update concludes that review platforms explain under 2 percent of why one vendor gets quoted more than a competitor, behind YouTube, LinkedIn, and Reddit. Under 2 percent is not zero. It is small enough that we would not fund a campaign against it.
What changed when G2 acquired Capterra, Software Advice, and GetApp?
One company now runs all four listings. G2 announced the purchase from Gartner in February 2026, bringing close to 6 million verified reviews and a reach of more than 200 million annual software buyers under one owner.
For a vendor, that is four profiles to keep current under one company instead of two. None of the research we read measures whether the AI engines weigh those domains differently now that they share an owner. We have not seen a tracker built to answer it.
Kalungi's tracker does separate the two big ones. It counts about 73,662 mentions of G2 across six AI engines, roughly 1.7 times Capterra's volume.
How much do review sites actually influence B2B buying decisions?
We can no longer separate that from what the chatbot does, and G2's own research is the reason. Its March 2026 survey of 1,076 B2B software buyers, reported by Demand Gen Report, found 51 percent start software research in an AI chatbot rather than a search engine, and 69 percent chose a different vendor than they had planned on, based on AI guidance.
Notice who ran that survey. G2 published the finding that buyers have moved to chatbots, and in the same year bought the three directories it competed with. We have no reason to doubt the numbers, and we would still want a second survey from someone with nothing riding on the answer. We have not found one.
ChatGPT is where 63 percent of those buyers go. Our read is that the profile gets read twice now, once by a person comparing options and once by whatever summarizes the category for them, and only the first ends in a click you can count.

FAQs about Do G2 and Capterra reviews help you get cited by AI
1. Do you need G2 reviews to show up in ChatGPT?
Loudmink's study of 233 ChatGPT software recommendations found 99 percent of the named tools had G2 reviews and 100 percent had Capterra reviews, so a profile reads as the entry ticket. The same study found review aggregators made up 0.9 percent of direct citations, and the G2 and Capterra pages themselves received none.
2. How many G2 reviews do you need before AI recommends you?
No count is supported by the research we read. In Loudmink's study of 233 ChatGPT recommendations, review volume tracked weakly negative against ranking, minus 0.21 on Capterra and minus 0.16 on G2. Kalungi's August 2026 tracker puts review platforms under 2 percent of the visibility gap between competing vendors, behind YouTube, LinkedIn, and Reddit.
3. Does G2 own Capterra now?
G2 announced in February 2026 that it would acquire Capterra, Software Advice and GetApp from Gartner. The company put the combined total at close to 6 million verified reviews and a reach of more than 200 million annual software buyers.
